My daughter got into making ceramic art at school and learned how to handle, mold, process, fire, glaze and re-fire ceramics. We decided to make this a project for us to do together.
First we went to the pottery store and bought white clay. They rolled it out for us into a sheet that was even in thickness. Then, using a pattern I made, we cut out each tiles and created the patterns on them. As the tiles dried we could rub and lightly sand them to clean up the rough edges and polish the “3” tiles which were going to be glossy white.
The completely dry tiles are called Greenware. Once the tiles are fired, or cooked, at over 2000 degrees they become hard and brittle and are called Bisque. Then glazes are applied and they fired a second time to melt the glaze and create the finish textures and colors of the final product.
